McKinney Elementary School
An abandoned asphalt parking lot becomes a luscious outdoor classroom. Complete with a food forest garden, a native plant garden, a pollinator garden, and a grape arbor, this space will soon be teeming with activity! Care was taken to utilize existing plants and bed space, design theme gardens relating to actual classroom lessons, and to incorporate low-maintenance, perennial plantings. The central feature is a radial pattern of raised beds, one for each grade level to plant and maintain throughout the school year. Construction completed in fall 2009, planting in spring 2010.
This design helped McKinney Elementary School win a 2009 Educational Grant Award from Lowe’s to fund the project.
