A NE Portland backyard becomes an urban farm in one season. Utilizing Permaculture Design methods, all existing lawn was replaced with attractive edible plants. The focus of this landscape was to include as many edible trees, shrubs, and perennial plants as possible, thus eliminating yearly maintenance tasks associated with annual crops. Herbs, fruit trees, and berry bushes offer year-round interest and harvest, while seasonal vegetables and edible flowers fill in the color palette. At the height of the summer, this organic garden is filled with hummingbirds, bees, earthworms, and hungry neighbors!
